They’re both essentially exactly the same, but sugar bombs release sugar and tea bombs release tea. Whenever Christmas time is approaching, these styles of products become increasingly popular and it’s not difficult to see why, as they’re a lot of fun. But how to make a sugar bomb or a tea bomb? Let’s take a closer look.

Many of the tutorials for tea bombs use isomalt, which is an ingredient that’s not very accessible. However, sugar can be replaced with this and that’s where sugar bombs come in! You may be curious as to the ingredients when it comes to tea bombs. The truth is, it all depends on which recipe you’re following. Some call for sugar, while others call for isomalt. We’ll be taking a look at both variations. However, our sugar tea bombs contain the following ingredients:

  • water
  • white sugar
  • tea bags of your choice
  • gel food coloring of your choice
  • candy thermometer
  • silicone mold (semi-circle)
  • optional fillings (such as edible flowers, edible confetti, luster dust, etc.)

Like most foods, tea bombs can be enjoyed in moderation. As sugar is used it’s best not to have them too often, but they’re certainly not bad for you! They are predominantly just the tea of your choice!

Let’s get down to the reason you’re here – how to make tea bombs with sugar! Let’s take a closer look.

Ingredients

The ingredients you’ll need for this recipe are:

  • 1/3 cup of light corn syrup
  • 2 tbsp of water
  • 1 cup of white sugar
  • tea bags of choice
  • gel food coloring of choice
  • silicone mold (semi-circle)
  • candy thermometer
  • optional fillings (such as edible confetti, edible flowers, and luster dust)

How To Make A Sugar Bomb

Recipe – How To Make A Sugar Bomb

Step 1: Create the Liquid

Add the sugar, water, and light corn syrup to a saucepan or pot. Place your candy thermometer into the pot in preparation. Bring the mixture to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, add the gel food coloring and stir with a spatula (preferably silicon). When the sugar mixture is ready, it should be around 300 degrees. At this point, you can remove it from heat.

Step 2: Add to Molds – How To Make A Sugar Bomb

Using a spoon, add the liquid to your silicone mold. You’ll have to do this quickly and carefully, as it will harden. Try to do this as evenly as possible. Remember, practice makes perfect! Be mindful that the sugar will be hot, so avoid using your fingers (no matter how tempting!). Leave to set for around 20 minutes. Once set, push out the bottom of the mold gently and remove HALF of the circle pieces, and leave the other half inside the mold.

Step 3: Fill Your Molds

With the semi-circles left inside the mold, add the teabags of your choice (folded or otherwise). At this point, you can also add additional items such as edible flowers, edible confetti or luster dust. Be sure to leave the string of the teabag OUTSIDE the mold.

Step 4: Complete Your Circles

Gently heat a skillet on low for several seconds. With the semi-circles you’ve removed from the mold, place on the skillet for a few seconds to heat the edges and then place onto one of the semi-circles still in the silicone mold. Repeat until all circles are complete and leave for around 10 minutes to ensure they’re completely set. Once set, gently remove the tea bombs from the mold. Enjoy!

How to Make Tea Bombs and Use Them

  1. Fill the mug with hot water.
  2. Place the bomb into the water (leaving the string outside of the water)
  3. Your tea bomb will either explode into the water immediately or need slight help from the tea bag string
  4. Stir and enjoy!
