Equipment

  • 10-inch cake pan
  • Non-stick baking paper
  • Non-stick cooking spray
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Mixing bowls
  • Electric or hand mixer
  • Spatula
  • Cooling rack

 Step by step instructions

Step 1: Make the crumb topping

Before jumping right in, first prepare your equipment. To start, preheat your oven to 360ºF (180ºC). Then, line the bottom of your cake pan with non-stick baking paper. You can also spray the sides with cooking spray. Set the pan aside.

To make the crumb topping, combine all of the ingredients inside a large mixing bowl. Leave out the chocolate chips. Then, cream them together until you have a crumbly mixture.

Finally, fold in the chocolate chips and set the mixture aside until it’s needed.

Step 2: Make the cake batter base

First, combine the smooth creamy peanut butter and softened salted butter in a large mixing bowl. Cream the ingredients together until they become fluffy.

Next, add your vanilla and brown sugar. Beat the mixture for roughly 3-5 minutes, or until the sugar starts dissolving.

Once your sugar starts dissolving, you can add the large eggs one at a time. Make sure to mix the ingredients well before adding the next egg.

Step 3: Add the dry ingredients

Once your liquid base has been made, you can sift all of the dry ingredients into it. Make sure that there are no lumps.

Mix the ingredients together until you have a uniform batter. Once your flour is almost completely incorporated, stop and add the milk slowly.

On a low mixing speed, whisk in the milk to get a smooth creamy cake batter.

Finally, you can add the chocolate chips and fold them in gently.

Step 4: Assemble your cake

Once you have a completely smooth and uniform cake batter, you can pour it into the cake pan. Do not bang the cake on the counter. This will remove any air pockets that will help give the cake a soft texture.

Now, add the crumb topping over your cake batter. Do not press it into the batter because it will disappear completely and not get uber crispy.

Step 5: Bake your cake

Bake your cake for roughly 30-35 minutes in your preheated oven. Once the time has elapsed, first check the doneness of the cake before removing it.

If your cake has been fully baked, remove it from the oven and allow it to cool on a wire rack at room temperature.

Once your cake has completely cooled, you can serve it immediately with some freshly whipped cream or ice cream if you’d like.

Expert Tips And Tricks

  • For our Jif peanut butter cake recipe, we like to use creamy peanut butter for the batter and crunchy peanut butter for the topping. Each helps give the elements a unique texture. But, if you want to, you can only use one of these for your cake.
  • If you only want to make the cake recipe, you definitely can leave off the crumb topping. And, you can even bake the crumb topping on its own to use for another dish. For the cake recipe only, you will still bake the cake for 30-35 minutes. But, for the crumb-only recipe, you can bake it for roughly 10-15 minutes or until it becomes crunchy.
  • You can use any type of chocolate that you’d like. You can even leave it out completely if you don’t want that much sugar inside the cake. We love adding dark chocolate chips to our recipe. But, most people will probably prefer semi-sweet chocolate instead.
  • Here’s another nifty trick for adding chocolate to this recipe. Instead of using chocolate chips, buy a bar and chop it into small pieces. It will cost you a lot less money. It will also give your goods a more rustic look.
  • If you don’t have a 10-inch cake pan, don’t worry, we have got you covered. You can have a look at some alternative sizes that will work for this recipe too. This Jif peanut butter cake recipe makes between 8-10 cups of batter.

FAQs

What's the recipe for peanut butter cake?

A peanut butter cake recipe is pretty much like any other recipe. But, it usually contains fewer eggs to make room for the sticky creamy peanut butter. Peanut butter cakes are also not as fluffy because of the dense texture that they create. So, the cake recipe will either add less leavening ingredients, or a lot more to make up for this loss.

Can you use peanut oil for baking cakes?

You can use peanut oil for baking cakes, but only to substitute some of the vegetable oil a recipe calls for. Peanut oil has an extremely strong flavor, so adding anything more than 1/4 cup will be overwhelming. Never substitute peanut butter for peanut oil. Their consistencies aren't the same and therefore they won't function the same.

Can you freeze chocolate cake with peanut butter icing?

You can easily freeze a chocolate cake with peanut butter icing. In fact, peanut butter frostings freeze exceptionally well. They also aren't likely to separate once they thaw because of their sticky creamy nature.

How do you make chocolate-covered peanut butter balls?

To make chocolate-covered peanut butter balls, you will need to add some icing sugar to peanut butter. Do not freeze or chill the balls before covering them in chocolate. This will cause the coating to crack. Once your balls are shaped, dip them into melted and slightly cooled chocolate. Place them on a lined baking tray and allow the chocolate to harden.
