In this article, we will be doing some maths! Well, only some basic equations. But fear not, it is only to be able to accurately and consistently measure how much cake batter per cupcake cup to add. So, are you ready to bake the cupcakes of your dream every time? Let’s get right to it!
What Are Cupcakes and What Are They Made Of?
Everybody knows about cupcakes, but nobody knows where they originated and their history. The earliest recorded history of cupcakes dates back to 1796 in a cook by Amelia Simmons called American Cookery.
Over the decades, these tiny sweet treats have become so popular that in your everyday home kitchen, they were referred to as 1234 cakes. This is because of how the recipes were structured.
Today, the term has changed completely seeing as the word now refers to virtually any type of cake baked in a small cup.
There are also a few variants of cupcakes, such as mug cakes, cake in a jar, butterfly cakes, and mini cakes. Naturally, how much batter per cupcake will vary depending on which of these cakes you make.
However, today we will focus on traditional cupcakes made in cupcakes and muffin pans.
What is the Perfect Cupcake?
Cupcake recipes vary a lot. However, their characteristics should remain virtually the same. In our opinion, the perfect cupcake has a soft texture and some moisture. It should have a fine cake crumb and hold its shape well when decorated with frostings.
These treats should not be extremely spongy and aerated like chiffon cakes or angel food cakes.
Once the cupcake has been baked, it should technically be slightly domed. This is a characteristic that a good cupcake recipe provides. When cupcakes come out level, they likely have a too-dense or dry texture.
However, while they do have to dome slightly, they shouldn’t be lopsided and shouldn’t spill over the sides of the cupcake liner.
Now, it is also important to note that a cupcake batter is pretty much the same as a cake batter. So by using cake batter measurements, you will be able to use a lot more recipes.
The reason that we are discussing these characteristics is that the exact amount of batter you need to add to your cupcake cup will depend on the recipe too. If the cupcake recipe rises a lot, then you won’t have to add as much batter to the cup. If the recipe is very dense and doesn’t create a lot of lift, you will have to fill it with more batter.
How many batters Per Cupcake?
On average, you should fill each cupcake hole with cake batter to fill 2/3 of the cup. This rule goes for any sized cupcake – large, regular, or mini.
It is a good starting point if you try a recipe for the first time. Then, if you see it doesn’t rise enough or rise too much, you can adjust the quantity the next time you make it.
A regular cupcake cup can hold about 3.5 fluid ounces of liquid (100 milliliters). So, when doing the match, ultimately it comes to filling each cup with 3/4 cup of cake batter (66.6 milliliters).
You can also add 4 tablespoons of batter instead. Make sure they are a little heaped.
For mini cupcake molds, each cup can be filled with about 1 heaped tablespoon (15-20 milliliters) of cake batter.
And, for jumbo cupcakes, you will often use about 1/2 cup of cake batter per cupcake.
Now, remember that when calculating how much cake batter per cupcake you need, it is first important to know the size of the cup. This will ultimately determine the specific answer for your particular pan.
How Much Batter Per Cupcake Pan?
A regular cupcake pan contains about 12 cups. Of course, you get pans that have more or fewer holes, but the most common ones have 12.
So, to calculate how much cake batter per cupcake pan, simply multiply the amount per cupcake by 12. That will give you 3 cups of cake batter in total (if you are using a regular cupcake pan and sizes).
How to Accurately Measure the Amount of Batter Needed
There are a couple of ways to measure how much cake batter per cupcake you have to add. In our opinion, the most accurate measurement would be in grams. However, there isn’t an exact volume-to-gram conversion ratio for cupcake batter. This is because recipes differ and thus the weight in volume for each will differ.
So, we are left with measuring in volume. Now, measuring in the metric system is a lot more accurate than imperial. Milliliters accurately measure tiny amounts. But, if you don’t have measuring cups and spoons for them, you can use fluid ounces instead.
Measuring Using Cups and Spoons
This is the easiest way to measure 1/4 cup of batter per cupcake hole. But, you have to ensure that your cup measures accurately, you have to measure the cup itself.
Place one measuring cup on a scale and make sure to tare or zero it. Then, add in water until the measurement shows 240 grams or 8.11 ounces. Remember, grams are much more accurate.
Wherever the 240 grams of water reaches the cup, that is a true cup of liquid. If it is below the rim of your cup then make a permanent mark at that line. Then, you can simply estimate 1.4 of that amount.
For a much more accurate measurement of the 66 milliliters of cake batter, you need per cupcake cup, you can measure 66 grams of water in a cup and draw a line where it lands. Then, this measurement is accurate to how much cake batter per cupcake you need.
How to Fill Cupcake Liners Without Making a Mess
Filling cupcake liners have always been a bit of a nightmare for me! I always seem to manage to spill batter onto my countertop, on the edges of the cupcake pan…and pretty much everywhere else it shouldn’t be! However, practice makes perfect. And using certain tools and utensils in the kitchen can make the process as clean as possible.
I’ve found that using a cookie dough scoop is not only the best way to keep your kitchen mess free, but is also the perfect amount of batter too. Simply dip your scoop into the batter and level out with a spoon or spatula. Then pour the batter into your cupcake liner – it really is that easy! It’s important to note that for standard cupcakes, you’ll need around two scoops of batter for each cupcake liner. If you’d prefer to use a larger scoop, such as an ice cream scoop, you’ll only need to use one scoop of batter per cupcake.
This ensures that you’ll have an even amount of batter every time, for each cupcake and because the batter is contained in the cookie dough scoop, you’re very unlikely to spill any of the batters anywhere.
It’s also worth mentioning that you should never fill cupcake liners to the top – this is a sure way to make a mess! If you overfill your liners, they’ll overflow over the liner and your cupcakes will likely be uneven. Most bakers recommended filling your liners around 2/3 full. However, it may be trial and error for your specific cupcake pan.
Standard Cupcake Size Chart
There are many different sizes of cupcakes nowadays, from mini to jumbo-sized! You may be wondering what the average size and height of the cupcake sizes are, as well as the serving sizes. Let’s take a closer look at each size.
A mini cupcake will measure around 1.25 inches at the top and 1 inch at the bottom. The height of the cake should be around 0.75 inches. If you’re just serving mini cupcakes, you should expect to serve 1-2 per child and 2-3 per adult.
A standard cupcake will measure around 2.25 inches at the top and 2 inches at the bottom. The height of the cake should be around 1.5 inches. If you’re just serving standard cupcakes, you should expect to serve around 1/2-1 per child and 1-2 per adult.
A large cupcake will measure around 3 inches at the top and 2.5 inches at the bottom. The height of the cake should be around 2 inches. If you’re just serving large cupcakes, you should expect to serve around 1/4-1/2 per child and 1/2-1 per adult.
A jumbo cupcake will measure around 3.5 inches at the top and 3 inches at the bottom. The height of the cake should be around 3 inches. If you’re just serving jumbo cupcakes, you should expect to serve a few children per jumbo and 1/2 per adult.
Consistency of Cupcake Batter
You may be wondering whether your cupcake batter should be thick or runny. How should the color look? In terms of color, it should be pale. In terms of consistency, it should be fluffy and similar to the consistency of glue paste. In terms of texture, it should be smooth and creamy. It should not be grainy.
