If you’re using the tall swirl technique, for 12 cupcakes, you’ll need 2 cups of frosting, for 24 cupcakes, you’ll need 4 cups of frosting and for 36 cupcakes, you’ll need around 6 cups of frosting.
If you’re using the buttercream rosette technique, for 12 cupcakes, you’ll need 1.5 cups of frosting, for 24 cupcakes, you’ll need 3 cups of frosting and for 36 cupcakes, you’ll need around 4.5 cups of frosting.
It’s worth mentioning that frosting for round, square, and sheet cakes will vary massively depending on the height and size of the layers.
Large Batch Buttercream Frosting Recipe
Why not try this recipe if you want to make a large batch of buttercream frosting? It makes around 10 cups of frosting. For this recipe you’ll need the following ingredients:
- 3 cups of softened butter
- 12 cups of confectioners’ sugar, sifted
- 4 teaspoons of vanilla extract
- 4-6 tablespoons of milk
- pinch of salt
Now all you need to do is:

Add the butter to a stand mixer and beat for around 6-8 minutes. Once smooth and pale in color, gradually add the confectioners’ sugar; scraping the sides of the bowl as you go.
Step 2: Mix
Once combined, add the milk, salt, and vanilla extract and mix for 3-5 minutes. Once fluffy, your frosting is ready to use!
