Lindt Chocolate got its start in Switzerland in the 1840s. It all began when David Sprüngli started a small confectionery in Zurich, Switzerland. Along with his son Rudolf Sprüngli-Ammann, David produced the first solid bar of chocolate in the German-speaking part of Switzerland in 1845.
The Sprüngli’s chocolate soon became a huge hit and by 1847 they opened their first chocolate factory in Horgen. In the 1850s, David expanded his business, and his two sons, Rudolf and Johann Rudolf, eventually took over the company.
After David divided the company between his two sons, Johann Rudolf joined forces with fellow chocolatier Rodolphe Lindt after first meeting in 1899. The brand became known as Lindt & Sprüngli and by the 1920s the chocolate company began opening subsidiaries abroad. In 1969, Lindt released their famous wrapped truffles which became an instant hit.
