Step by Step Instructions

Step One: Write Text

To start out, type your message out on your computer in your choice of font, then print it out. You will use this to trace over with your melted chocolate.

Step Two: Melt Chocolate

Using a stovetop, carefully melt your chocolate. You can also use the microwave to melt your chocolate based on the instructions on the bag. Allow the melted chocolate to cool slightly before adding it to your piping bag, Ziploc bag, or squeeze bottle.

Step Three: Write Your Text

Take a piece of parchment or wax paper and place it above your printed text. With your melted chocolate in a piping bag or squeeze bottle, trace over the letters onto the parchment paper. Allow the chocolate to fully dry on the parchment paper, if you mess up, simply take the dried letter off and rewrite it.

Step Four: Add Chocolate Text to Your Cake

Once the chocolate is fully dried, carefully place the letters onto the cake from the parchment paper. Gently slide the letters of the parchment paper or carefully use your hands to place them on the cake. The chocolate will be delicate, so handle with care.

Tips and Tricks for How to Write on a Cake

Don’t be afraid to practice piping with chocolate before tracing out your letters. Using a drip bottle can be an easy and effective way to write your letters if you don’t want to use a piping or Ziploc bag. If you don’t want to trace letters, there are still many great ways to write on your cake without icing.

Using chocolate candies or fruit is an easy and tasty way to write on cakes. Simply take M&Ms, chocolate chips, blueberries, raspberries, or sliced strawberries and carefully arrange them to spell out letters. You can even use a toothpick to carefully outline your letters before placing down your chocolates or fruits.

Stencils are a simple and elegant way to decorate cakes. You can purchase sheets of the alphabet where you can cut out the letters and arrange them as you like. Happy birthday stencils are also available, where you can place them right on the cake without any cutting.

You can also make your own stencils at home. With parchment paper, you can cut out the text you want. Place your stencils, whether homemade or store-bought, directly onto your cake. You can use either powdered sugar or sprinkles to fill in your stencils, as both will look beautiful on your cake.

Save yourself a trip to the store and make a banner for your cake at home. Simply type up the text on your computer, using any font, and print it out. Carefully cut out your banner and attach it to toothpicks and gently place it on your cake.

Easy and Effective Ways to Write on Your Cake

Even if you can bake a delicious cake, decorating can be a whole other challenge. Writing with a piping bag and frosting directly on a cake can be frustrating, as it can take lots of practice to get it just right. Not everyone has the time or skills to hand pipe writing onto cakes.

Luckily, using chocolate is a great alternative to having to pipe icing. There are also several great other ways like stencils, candies, fruit, and toppers. You won’t need any fancy nozzles to elegantly decorate your cakes.
