Step By Step Instructions: Double Bag Technique

Step One: Prepare Your Frosting

Divide your buttercream evenly into two separate bowls. Add your food coloring of choice to each bowl and mix until fully incorporated.

Step Two: Add the Frosting to Piping Bags

Add one color of frosting to one 12-inch piping bag and the other color of frosting to the other 12-inch piping bag. Cut large holes in each bag at the bottom, closet to the same size as possible.

Step Three: Add the Piping Bags to the Larger Piping Bag

Carefully slide both 12-inch piping bags into the large 16-inch piping bag with the large piping tip. Line the bags up side to side, trying to get them as even as possible. Test out the frosting on a plate before frosting your baked goods to make sure you get a good swirl.

Step by Step Instructions: Plastic Wrap Technique

Step One: Prepare the Frosting

Separate your buttercream frosting evenly into two different bowls. Add the food coloring you desire to each bowl and mix well. Add your colors into separate 12-inch piping bags and cut a large hole in the bottom.

Step Two: Add the Frosting to Plastic Wrap

Cut a large piece of plastic wrap and lay it flat on your kitchen counter. Pipe a row of frosting with your first color and then pipe a second row right next to the first one with your other color. Carefully roll the plastic wrap up with the frosting and then twist the top and bottom of the wrap.

Step Three: Add the Plastic Wrap to Your Large Piping Bag

Cut the bottom end of the plastic wrap to create a large hole. Place the plastic wrap frosting tube into a 16-inch piping bag with a large piping tip. Test the frosting out on the plate to make sure the colors swirl well before decorating your cake or cupcakes.

Step by Step Instructions: Spatula and Large Piping Bag Technique

Step One: Prepare Your Frosting

Separate your buttercream frosting equally into two separate bowls. Add your food colorings of choice and mix until each color is fully incorporated.

Step Two: Add Your Frosting to a Large Piping Bag

Take your 16-inch piping bag fitted with a large tip and add your first color of frosting. Carefully use an offset spatula to fill just one side of the piping bag, trying your best to not get any frosting on the other side.

Once done with your first color, wipe off the offset spatula with a paper towel. Flip the bag around and use the offset spatula to add the second color, careful not to touch the first color. Test the frosting out on a plate to make sure it has a good swirl before decorating your desserts.

Tips and Tricks

If you are having a hard time filling the piping bags, place them into a drinking glass and fold the sides over the top. This will make it much easier to fill and save you time and hassle.

If you don’t want to use a large circular tip, you can also use large decorative ones. This will allow you to pipe different shapes and designs, making for a beautiful finished product.
