Chocolate and buttercream: two things that go together perfectly. The rich and creamy taste of buttercream along with the irresistible taste of chocolate come together to make the perfect frosting. This Kittencal chocolate frosting is so delicious it will have you licking the bowl clean.
This chocolate buttercream pairs well with many different desserts, including white cake, chocolate cake, brownies, and cookies. Not only will you love how this buttercream tastes, but you will also love how easy it is to make, as it requires no prior baking experience.
Cocoa Buttercream Frosting: Using Cocoa Powder in Baking
Cocoa powder is made by pressing chocolate liquor and removing three-quarters of its cocoa butter. The remainder of the cocoa solids is then processed, making fine unsweetened cocoa powder.
Unsweetened cocoa powder comes in two types: Dutch-processed and natural. Dutch-processed, also known as alkalized, is treated with alkali to neutralize. Dutch-processed cocoa powder is used in recipes that call for baking powder or other acidic ingredients because it is neutral and does not react with baking soda.
Natural unsweetened cocoa powder has a bitter taste by itself but gives desserts a deep chocolate flavor. When used with baking soda it acts as a leavening agent. It is often used in cookies, brownies, and cakes.
Adding cocoa powder to the frosting gives it a rich chocolate taste. Adding cocoa powder to frosting allows you to control how strong the chocolate flavor is in your frosting.
Though unsweetened cocoa powder provides a delicious chocolate flavor when added to desserts, it does not taste so wonderful on its own. Unsweetened cocoa powder has a bitter taste when eaten by itself.
Cocoa Buttercream Frosting: Benefits of Cocoa Powder
Not only does cocoa powder taste delicious when added to desserts, but it also has several health benefits on its own. Cocoa powder includes polyphenols, which are naturally occurring antioxidants. Polyphenols provide many health benefits, including reducing inflammation, improving blood flow, lowering blood pressure, improving cholesterol, and improving blood sugar levels.
Cocoa powder also includes nutrients that help improve your mood. It is also believed that cocoa butter can help decrease your chances of cancer.
Some of the ways you can benefit from cocoa powder include eating dark chocolate, drinking hot cocoa, adding it to rice pudding, and sprinkling it on top of the fruit. Though frosting is not the healthiest way to consume cocoa powder, it will certainly make you happy based on how good it tastes.

Tips and Tricks
When making this recipe, it is important to sift the confectioners’ sugar and cocoa powder. Both confectioners’ sugar and cocoa powder absorb moisture from the air which creates lumps. By sifting, you are eliminating these lumps and adding air, making it fluffier.
The best way to sift confectioners’ sugar and cocoa powder are by using a mesh strainer. The mesh strainer is fine enough that it will catch all lumps and smoothly let the cocoa powder and confectioners’ sugar pass through. If you don’t have a mesh strainer, a flour sifter will work just as well.
It is also important to make sure that your butter has softened before adding it to the frosting. Butter that is still cold may cause stiff frosting and may cause the frosting to curdle, giving it the wrong texture.
You should allow butter to sit out at room temperature for around 30 minutes to let it fully soften. If you forgot to let your butter sit out to soften, you may use the microwave to soften it. Start with 20-second intervals at 10% power for half a stick of butter, checking and rotating the butter if it needs more time.
This frosting can be stored at room temperature for up to three days in an airtight container. It can also be stored in the fridge for up to one week and in the freezer for up to six months.
If you stored it in the fridge or freezer, allow it to reach room temperature before serving. You will probably need to whip it before using it, as it will have likely separated.

Kittencal Chocolate Fantasy Cake Recipe
Kittencal has a huge selection of incredible dessert recipes. One of my favorites is their chocolate cake, which you can top with the delicious Kittencal chocolate frosting that we’ve already looked at. For this recipe, you’ll need the following ingredients:
- 1 cup of softened butter
- 1 1/2 cups of packed brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon of instant coffee
- 3 large eggs
- 1 1/2 cups of buttermilk
- 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract
- 2 cups of all-purpose flour
- 1 cup of cocoa powder
- 3/4 teaspoon of salt
- 1 1/2 teaspoons of baking soda
- 1 batch of Kittencal chocolate frosting (see above)
Now all you need to do is:
-
- Gather all of the ingredients you need and preheat your oven to 350F. You’ll also need to grease and line two round cake pans.
- Grab a bowl and add the following ingredients: butter, brown sugar, and instant coffee. Beat the ingredients together with a stand mixer for around 5 minutes. At this point, the mixture should be fluffy and aerated.
- Individually add the eggs to the batter; only add the next egg once the previous egg is completely combined. Once all eggs have been added, beat for around 3 minutes and then mix in your vanilla extract.
- In a separate bowl, sift the flour, cocoa powder, salt, and baking soda. Alternately add the dry ingredients, along with the buttermilk. Keep doing so until all ingredients are well combined.
- Pour batter into your prepared cake pans and place in the center of your preheated oven and bake for around 30-35 minutes. A toothpick in the center of the cake should come out clean when ready.
-
- Leave to cool before frosting with your Kittencal chocolate frosting (see recipe above).
