Step by Step Instructions on How to Make Rice Paper

Step 1 

In a mixing bowl, add the rice flour, potato starch, salt, and water.

Step 2

Whisk until it becomes thoroughly combined. Make sure that it is smooth and clutter-free.

Step 3

Prepare the plate and wrap it tightly with plastic wrap.

Step 4

Pour a tablespoon of the mixture into the plate and spread it in a circular motion using a standard spoon.

Step 5

Place it inside the microwave for 45 seconds. Take it out, turn it upside down, and slowly remove the plastic wrap.

 

Step 6

Tips And Tricks To Make Ricepaper

Plastic wrap in a microwave is safe as long as labeled as “microwave-safe.” The approximate time of 45 seconds is for a 500W microwave, so the amount of cooking time may vary depending on your microwave. Do not panic if the edges rip off while removing the plastic wrap. Once it starts to come off, it will be easier to remove. You can substitute a quilting hoop with cheesecloth.

Cover with a damp paper towel around the sides and top of the rice paper until ready to serve to avoid it from drying out. When making dessert using rice paper, too much filling may tear it when rolled, so make sure not to overfill it. Likewise, make sure minimum pressure when sealing it. Also, maintain sufficient space to fold it. Wrappers are delicate so soak them in warm water for about three to four seconds, then remove them when you see that the wrapper edges are softened.

How to Make Sweet Rice Paper?

While rice paper tastes quite bland, you can certainly make sweet treats using rice paper, to make your rice paper wrappers even more exciting. One of my favorite uses of rice paper is banana spring rolls. This recipe is inspired by one from Create Kids Club. Let’s take a closer look.

Ingredients

The ingredients you’ll need for this recipe are:

  • 8 rice paper wrappers
  • 4 medium bananas, in halves
  • 1/4 cup of sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon of apple pie spice
  • vegetable oil, to fry
  • ice cream or sauce, to serve

Now all you need to do is:

Step 1: Prepare

Gather the ingredients you need for this recipe and heat around an inch of oil in a pan until it reaches 350F. Grab a bowl and add the sugar and apple pie spice. Mix well and leave to one side.

Step 2: Fill the Wrappers

Place your rice paper into the water for around 10 seconds and then remove it. Sprinkle around a teaspoon of the sugar mixture onto the wrapper evenly and then place a small amount of banana into the center of the wrapper. Fold the sides of the wrapper, then roll. Repeat until all wrappers and banana has been used.

Step 3: Fry

Place your banana rolls into the hot oil and cook for around 2 1/2 minutes on each side. Remove from oil and drain on paper towels. Enjoy!

Black sesame rice paper is better known as a Vietnamese sesame rice cracker (or Banh da, if you’re using its traditional name). They’re made from rice flour and are often enjoyed as a snack.
