What Is This Betty Crocker Silver White Cake Recipe?
There are hundreds, potentially thousands of different types of cakes out there. And every day, it seems like new ones are added to the official lists. A silver-white cake may not be all that new, but the term is certainly not used frequently!
So, what exactly is a silver-white cake? Well, essentially it is a type of cake made using only egg whites. In comparison, a vanilla cake (also sometimes called a gold white cake) is made using egg yolks too. The yolks are what give the crumb a more golden color.
In essence, these two terms only really describe the color of the cake and whether or not the recipe includes egg whites. But, the term white cake describes virtually all types of vanilla cakes.
Now, getting to our Betty Crocker silver white cake specifically – the recipe provided on their site is great! But, as you already know, we always like to push some creativity and develop an even better recipe!

How to make this Betty Crocker silver-white cake recipe
Step 1: Prepare your equipment
It may seem like a useless step, but trust us! Preparing all of your ingredients and equipment before you start is crucial, especially with a recipe that is assembled this quickly!
To start, preheat your oven to 350ºF (180ºC). Then, line two 9-inch round cake pans with non-stick baking paper or cooking spray.
And finally, measure out all of your ingredients and separate the egg whites and yolks.
Step 2: Make the silver white cake batter
To start, place the egg whites in a large mixing bowl. Then, at a high speed, whisk the egg whites until they reach medium peaks. Once they slightly fold over, set them aside until they are needed.
Next, add the Betty Crocker white cake mix and baking powder into a large mixing bowl. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and add the water and oil. Whisk the ingredients together until you get a uniform smooth batter.
Finally, gently fold in the medium peaks egg whites in three additions. To start, roughly mix in one-third of the egg whites. Then, gently fold in the second third followed by the final third.
Step 3: Bake the cake
Once your batter has been made, gently pour it into your lined cake pans. Make sure to divide the mixture evenly so that the cake layers come out equally high.
Bake your cakes for roughly 25-30 minutes or until a cake tester comes out clean.
Once the cakes have been fully baked, remove them from the oven and allow them to cool inside their pans for 15 minutes. Then, remove them and cool them on a wire rack until they reach room temperature.
Step 4: Make the dark chocolate buttercream frosting
For the buttercream frosting, cream the butter until it becomes light in color and gets a fluffy texture. Then, add the sifted powdered sugar and cocoa powder. Do not add any lumpy parts!
Beat the mixture until the ingredients start creating a creamy frosting. Once you have a uniform mixture, add the vanilla extract.
You can keep beating the mixture to create a fluffy frosting. If needed, add some milk to help soften the buttercream. But, only add a teaspoon or two at a time to prevent making it too runny.
Step 5: Decorate the Betty Crocker silver white cake
The final step in this recipe is to assemble and decorate your cake! To start, place a dollop of frosting in the center of your cake stand or cake board. Then, add one layer of cake. Add some frosting onto the first layer, followed by another sheet of cake.
Finally, cover the entire cake with your frosting in any way that you’d like. You can use a piping bag or make a rustic cake with only an offset spatula. Top with the garnishes of your choice and serve!
Expert Tips And Tricks For Your Homemade Betty Crocker Silver White Cake Mix Recipe
- When choosing an oil for this recipe, try to find a colorless one. It may be difficult, but we highly recommend it. This will help get that uber white color that makes a silver white cake unique. Colorless and flavorless coconut oil is often easy to find and affordable.
- You don’t necessarily have to level the cake layers if they already come out relatively flat. But, if you need to, use the technique shown in this video. They are possibly the most effective out there.
- You can also bake this cake in two 8-inch cake pans for 29-34 minutes. Or, make 24 delicious cupcakes and bake them for only 14-19 minutes.
