Best Red Velvet Box Cake Recipe

  • Prepare - Gather all of the ingredients you need and preheat your oven to 340F. Grease and flour 3 cake pans before you make the batter.
  • Bake the Cake - Grab a bowl and add all of the cake ingredients. Mix well until all of the ingredients are just combined; this will take a few minutes. Now pour your batter into your prepared pans and place in the center of your preheated oven for around 25-30 minutes. You can check it's baked by placing a toothpick into the center of your cake; if it comes out clean, it's fully baked. Leave to cool completely on a wire rack before frosting.
  • Make the Meringue Buttercream - Grab a bowl and add the sifted sugar and egg whites. Mix well until the sugar has dissolved. At this point, add your salt, vanilla extract, and butter, gradually. Keep beating the mixture well for around 15-20 minutes to ensure it's extra creamy. Once ready, split into 3 bowls and add the pink and red food coloring individually to two of the bowls (leave one portion as it is).
  • Decorate the Cakes - Add a filling of your choice between each layer (buttercream is a great choice) and leave to chill for around 15 minutes. Using a piping bag, add a layer of red buttercream at the bottom, then the pink above, then the white at the top. You can smooth the buttercream with a cake comb or the back of a spoon. If you have any buttercream left over, add a few dollops to the top of your cake. Serve, slice, and enjoy!
