Equipment

  • Small sharp knife
  • Small paintbrush
  • Molding tools
  • Silicone mat
  • Turntable cake stand
  • Cake board (12-inch)
  • Star piping tip
  • Piping Bag
  • Piping gel
  • 6-inch styrofoam cake dummy (optional)
  • Cling wrap

Ingredients

  • 6- inch Cake cooled and prepped
  • Vanilla buttercream
  • White fondant homemade or store-bought
  • Gold luster dust
  • Gel food coloring black, pink, purple, blue you may choose any color you want.

Instructions

  • Before anything else, make three balls of white fondant. In that regard, one should be 2 1/2 inches for the unicorn's body. In addition to that, one ball should be 1 1/2 inches from the head of the unicorn. And one ball should be 1 inch for the unicorn's arms.
  • Then, form the body of the unicorn. While shaping the body, cover the other pieces with cling wrap or plastic wrap. Doing this prevents them from drying out. Remember, shape the fondant into a long oval. After that, narrow the end of the fondant piece. In addition to that, try to shape it to be thicker at the top part and thinner towards the bottom. Afterward, give the unicorn a belly since it is a fat unicorn that eats a cake.
  • After that, the thinner side of the oval-shaped fondant will become the unicorn's legs. Then, carefully cut and form the legs using a small sharp knife. Once you cut the fondant to make legs, mold them to create a curvy shape.
  • Then, use the pointed molding tool to mark the unicorn's hoof on each leg. Next, make two holes using a toothpick or skewer. With that, make sure to poke one hole for the belly button. And then stick the toothpick for the head. Because of that, the toothpick will support the head on the body of the unicorn later.
  • Afterward, create the unicorn's head by shaping the 1 1/2 inch ball of fondant into a head by carefully pressing. Because of this, it makes one side thicker than the other. In that regard, the thicker side of the fondant will become the mouth and cheeks. At the same time, the thinner side will be the eyes and forehead. Remember, you can use your thumbs to mold and press to make the space for the eyes. Next, create a small slit for the mouth using a molding tool to form the mouth. After that, use the pointed molding tool to create nostrils that look like a teardrop.
  • To make the unicorn arms, divide the 1-inch fondant ball. And shape them into two long ropes about 1/2-inch thick. Next, cut a piece carefully off about 1/4-inch from both ropes to create the hoofs. Then, mold the arms into a curve shape. After that, bend at the elbows to create a natural look. Afterward, use a 6-inch round styrofoam cake dummy to measure and position the unicorn. Then, allow it to dry.
  • Next, take the two small pieces of white fondant. And form them into two thin ropes to create the unicorn horn. With that, one end of each rope should be thinner. Then, twist the fondant ropes together. Afterward, measure the horn on the unicorn's head to have an exact size. Because of that, it should be about 1 inch long. Once measured, cut the horn and skewer it using a small floral wire. Or you could use a toothpick and let it dry.
  • While the molded unicorn parts are drying, use a small piece of pink fondant. Do this to line the inside of your unicorn's mouth. Then, create a little tongue that will hang out on the open mouth of your unicorn. To make the eyes, shape a small piece of black fondant for your unicorn's eyelashes and eyebrows. Afterward, let your molded unicorn parts dry for a while. Then, put the pieces in the styrofoam piece. Finally, place your unicorn parts in a cool place away from the sun and heat to dry completely.

Notes

You can make the unicorn a few days before decorating your cake. Making the toppers in advance gives you plenty of time to create and to let them dry. If the fondant is too sticky for your liking, add cornstarch. Moreover, if the fondant is too dry, use a vegetable shortening. Besides that, if you want to rush. And you want the fondant to dry faster, mix some tylose powder to dry it in a short period.
