Instructions

How to Color Fondant

  • Add Small Amounts of Color - Before you begin, you need to make your fondant soft. The best way to do this is to roll the fondant in your hands to make it more flexible and make a ball shape. Using a skewer or toothpick, add a small amount of navy blue food coloring in drops. Place several spots onto the fondant.
  • Mix the Color - To mix the color into the fondant, you'll need to knead it. When doing this (especially with dark colors), it's best to use gloves as your hands are very likely to stain.
  • Keep Kneading - This may take several minutes, but keep kneading the color into your fondant until it reaches the desired color and is evenly distributed. It's worth noting that if the color is too light, you can add more drops of food coloring, and if the color is too dark, you can add additional white fondant.

Navy Blue Tile Cake Recipe

  • Make Cake - Before you begin decorating, make three layers of cake using a cake recipe that you love. Remove from oven once baked and leave to cool completely.
  • Make Buttercream - Using your favorite buttercream recipe and flavoring, make your buttercream. Place the buttercream between each layer of cake and stack your cake. Use the buttercream on the top of the cake and make it smooth.
  • Color Fondant - Color your fondant using the recipe above. Once you've colored your fondant navy blue, you'll need to use a square cutter to cut out around 112 squares. Once you've cut all of the squares, place them around your cake in two rows; one at the top and one at the bottom.
  • Finish - Roll out your white fondant and cut out around 450 leaves. Now, using a damp brush, carefully add the leaves to your cake. Attach four leaves for every one navy blue fondant square. Enjoy!
