Equipment

  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Large non-stick saucepan
  • Candy electric thermometer
  • Cooling Rack

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated brown sugar
  • 1 cup maple syrup
  • 1 can (15 ounces) of sweetened condensed milk

Instructions

  • Make the caramel sauce base
To start, place the salted butter into a large non-stick saucepan. Heat it over medium-high heat until it starts melting. Then, lower the heat slightly and allow the butter to melt completely. You don't want to have it burn for this sauce.
Once your butter has been completely melted, add the brown granulated sugar, the maple syrup, and your can of sweetened condensed milk.
1/2 cup unsalted butter, 1 1/2 cups granulated brown sugar, 1 cup maple syrup, 1 can (15 ounces) of sweetened condensed milk
  • Cook the caramel sauce
After combining all of your sauce ingredients together, bring the mixture to a rapid boil over high heat. Make sure to stir constantly so that the caramel doesn't burn and the heat is evenly distributed.
Allow the mixture to keep boiling until it reaches 215-220ºF (101.6-104.4ºC). Once it reaches 220ºF (104.4ºC), you can remove it from the heat and allow it to rest for a minute.
  • Pour the sauce
Don't allow the sauce to cool before pouring it. It will make it too hard and not pour nicely. Especially because we are using it for cinnamon rolls, you can pour the sauce once it has rested for a few minutes.
This pour will give the cinnamon rolls a rustic look, just like they should be! And, it will allow them to be covered better and with a thicker coating. This will ultimately also help keep the cinnamon rolls moist on the inside.

Notes

There are loads of variations you can make for this recipe. The biggest is the flavor - yes, that means the entire thing! One of our favorite alterations to make is to use salted butter. This will give the sauce a less overpowering sweet flavor. You can even add some sea salt flakes to make a salted caramel sauce for cinnamon rolls.
Furthermore, you can reduce the amount of brown sugar used in this recipe. This will lower the overall sweetness. You can also use white sugar, but the brown option gives you a richer deeper flavor.
