Instructions

  • Sift Confectioners' Sugar - Using a mesh sifter, sift the confectioners' sugar to remove any clumps. This will help ensure that your frosting will have a smooth texture.
  • Beat the Butter and Cream Cheese - In a large bowl using an electric mixer, beat the butter and cream cheese at medium speed. Beat them until they are fully combined and become smooth and creamy. If needed, scrape down the sides of the bowl with a rubber spatula to ensure the ingredients fully mix together.
  • Add the Rum - With the mixer now on low speed, add the rum. Add 5-6 tablespoons, depending on how strong you want the rum flavor to be.
  • Add the Confectioners' Sugar - Gradually add in the confectioners' sugar into the mixture. Beat at low speed for about 30 seconds to avoid the sugar from getting everywhere before beating at high speed. Beat the cream cheeses frosting until it is smooth and creamy, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed.

Notes

Store this frosting in an airtight container in the fridge for five to seven days. Any baked good decorated with this frosting should also be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to seven days. Cream cheese is perishable so it should be kept refrigerated when not serving.
Be sure to use only room temperature butter and cream cheese when making this frosting. Cold ingredients can mess up the consistency of the frosting, causing it to curdle. Curdling happens most commonly when the cream cheese is too cold.
Allow your cream cheese and butter to sit on the counter at room temperature for about 30 minutes. After around 30 minutes, they will be the right temperature to use in the frosting. This will allow for a smooth, creamy frosting.
Sifting your confectioners' sugar is another important step to making a delicious frosting. Sifting the confectioners' sugar not only removes any lumps but also makes the sugar fluffier by adding air. This will result in a truly delicious frosting with an amazing consistency.
You can use any brand of dark spiced rum that you would like. If you find the flavor is not strong enough, you can add it in more until it reaches your desired taste. Adding alcohol to frosting is a great way to make it more fun and add a unique taste.
